Males of these animals are called jacks. Females are called jennets. They have short heads and firm necks that are well proportioned to the rest of the animal. These animals come in a wide variety of colors. The most common color of their coat is dun-grey.

These animals are members of Equus asinus family. Ass is a correct name for members of this family. In North America the ass is more often called a donkey. Donkeys were brought to South America and Mexico by the Spanish Conquistadores in the 16 th century. Mini donkeys look funny in a photo; not all farms have them.
