Miniature Donkeys - Faults

Miniature Donkeys with following weaknesses should not be selected as breeding stock:

Convex profile of the head, coarseness of the neck and head.
Short, thick neck and low head carriage, or thin, concave neck.
Convex back, long and weak, sway back.
Short, high, or flat croup.
Insufficient bone in proportion to animal.
Crooked legs.
Overshot or undershot bite.

Life Span: 25-30 years, sometimes up to 40 years.
Gestation Period: 11-13 months.

All Donkeys are quite sturdy, and should be provided with a three-sided shed only, where they can find a shelter from the wind, sun, snow, and flies. They can withstand very cold temperatures as long as they are fed properly. All equine should be regularly wormed. Animals kept in small areas need more frequent worming than those on larger pastures. Every spring Miniature Donkeys should be vaccinated against tetanus, sleeping sickness, and influenza. Jennets should be vaccinated on the 5th, 7th, and 9th months of gestation against pneuabort. Also Miniature Donkeys need hooves trimming every 2-3 months. In the spring a Miniature Donkey looses its hair and has bald spots. It rubs the hair off over the back, croup, and around the head. If the Donkey rubs excessively, de worm it to make sure that parasites are not the problem, or give the animal a bath with betadine soap. At the age of 2 years Miniature Donkeys loose their baby teeth.
