Miniature Donkeys - Description

Miniature Donkeys are the smallest members of the horse family. They have long ears and small feet with sharp hooves. Miniature Donkeys lack true withers and have a straight back. The mane and tail of a Donkey are coarse; the tail is more like a cow's. The first Miniature Donkeys imported into the USA were between 32 and 38 inches high at the withers. The breeding program later developed a smaller animal ranging from 32 to 35 inches and weighing 250-400 pounds. As a rule the smaller the miniature animal is, the more valuable it is. As for the Donkeys, colors also matter. There are many different colors available in Donkeys. The actual coat color is in the summer while the winter colors may differ. Gray-dun is the original color of Miniature Donkeys' ancestors. It varies from light gray to very dark. There is a cross over the withers extending down the shoulders, and a stripe down the back. The muzzle and belly are usually white. Sometimes Donkeys have horizontal stripes on the legs. Other color patterns are: roan-gray, black and red, brown, white, sorrel, bay, and spotted with white and black. The most rare of colors for Miniature Donkeys are raven black and albino white with blue eyes.
